Welcome to the Village Phone Blog!

A place to discover and share what is happening in the Village Phone community.

Village Phone Operators as Walking Repositories of Information PDF Print E-mail

What if the Village Phone Operator became the repository of information for the businesses in their community? What if gathering information about the businesses in your community could be lucrative?

In Cambodia, some companies like Yellow Pages, with the support of GTZ, think that this is a great idea. Each time the Village Phone operator gathers names, addresses, telephone numbers and types of businesses in their community, they will either call or send this information through SMS to a Yellow Pages representative. Then, this will be entered into the Yellow Pages database, and subsequently be published in the yearly phone books. The Village Phone Operator receives a commission in return, transferred for now in the form of airtime money. (There are plans of m-banking in Cambodia, but it is not quite there yet). A pretty neat income generating idea!

The Innovativeness of Village Phone Operators PDF Print E-mail

Take a look around, and you are bound to catch a glimpse: entrepreneurs can be found all over the world, demonstrating their propensity for ingenuity and initiative. For example, some of the Village Phone Operators (VPOs) that we have come in contact with have put their creativity to work by offering some unique services beyond the traditional Village Phone setup. Aside from conventional telephone voice and SMS offerings, they have initiated services such as phone recharging stations, antenna rentals, airtime distribution, and message-taking for community members.

For instance, Joseph a VPO in Uganda began offering phone recharging as a side business. He earns twice as much by providing this service along with the traditional Village Phone voice and SMS services, and is very happy with the arrangement. He is looking to expand this business by purchasing additional chargers for the latest phone models.

VPOs have also been found to operate antenna rental services.  Often, where telecommunications networks are unreliable, people who own a personal telephone may still have trouble using it. Thus, Village Phone Operators may rent their antennas for a fee, such that they provide a service not only to people who do not own phones, but also to those who own phones but are unable to use them.

This is the case for VPO Pelagia Garcia of Yao-Yao Village in Cauayah, who charges 15 cents for the use of her antenna
Finally, message-taking services have become more prevalent. Essentially, the VPO charges a small fee for taking and delivering a message to members of their community. This way, people without a phone or voicemail can still be reachable by friends, relatives, and business contacts. Moreover, message-taking services can help people avoid many large costs, especially when it concerns emergencies or urgent news. Without such services, a message about the loss of a loved one and announcements about burial ceremonies, for example, would necessitate the use of public transport to deliver the message in person or other costly measures. Often, by the time the recipient had received the news, the funeral would have passed, rendering the message useless and increasing heartache. Thus, message-taking services can offer an instant, convenient method of communication and is an additional source of revenue for the VPO.

As these VPOs showcase their great entrepreneurial spirit, we are constantly hearing of new, unique, and sometimes surprising stories. Truly, the possibilities seem endless!
